The header photo above was taken in early June (see blog post She has had her baby). Since then I had only seen the mother a couple of times, no sign of her kid. That would not be unusual as the mothers leave their very young safely hidden while they go off for a feed. However, it had got to the stage where I wondered if they were still around, as for several weeks I’d not even seen the mother. I put my trail cameras out for a few days near where I had seen them, but still no sight! But then …
I had put two trail cameras out in an area opposite to where I’d seen them. I knew deer took these routes, so I thought I had a good chance of capturing something. After a few days I took the cameras back home and looked at the videos. The first one had a buck and doe on them (and a brief view of a fox at night). This was good. It’s always nice to see the deer, and a fox, are still active in the area. I then looked at the second camera and I had the best surprise.
There they were! Mother and kid, right in the middle of the screen! I was delighted; mostly because I was worried something might have happened to the kid. But here they were, both looking good and doing well. If you watch the video you see mother keeping an eye on the youngster and giving it a bit of a clean.
Obviously what’s happened is that when the kid was able to move around more, grown a little and not at so much risk from predators, the mother decided to move to another area close by. But whatever the reason it was a joy to see them.
As I mentioned above, the first camera I looked at captured a buck and doe. These two are definitely a pair as I see them together often.
So here’s their video too.
