Birds Are Back – And Three Deer

It seems the birds that had deserted us are back!

Although at home we only have a back yard, last year we put up a few bird feeders to see what would happen. To our surprise and delight we attracted quite a few. At first there was the robin, then came blue and great tits. Then it got exciting when nuthatch and goldfinch appeared, as well as a dunnock (first picture). The biggest surprise though had to be a woodpecker! Not for one minute did we expect that! The past couple of months though it had gone very quiet, apart from the robin and tits. This week though there has been more visitors.

Earlier in the week I spotted the nuthatch a couple of times; then I spotted the goldfinches were back, tucking away on the nyjer seeds. I don’t know why nearly all the birds had deserted us, but it’s great to see them coming back.

Now. Where’s that woodpecker!

Three Deer on the Hill

Out for a usual walk to see if the deer were about. I wandered into the edge of the woodland, just to see if anyone was around … nothing. It was very quiet everywhere though; no people, little birdsong and no deer.

As I was walking back I was thinking about when someone asked me how to spot deer. One of the things I said, which is very true, is to look out for white spots; in other words, the Roe Deer’s rump! As I was thinking this I was looking up to the hillside, and in the distance I could see a white ‘blob’. So, with telephoto lens looking up the hill, there they were; three ‘blobs’ actually.

I managed to get closer so I could get some sort of photos. These are three deer I often see; two doe’s and a buck. They were looking back at me, especially the buck; probably keeping lookout for his ladies. They didn’t seem too concerned though as there was a reasonable distance between us. The buck took a moment out to scratch an itch!

I watched them, watching me, for several minutes and then made my way back to my warm home, leaving the deer to graze.
