A Deer Catch-Up

There have been a few deer encounters the past week. There was the usual trio I often see and a couple of solo deer too; and I left the trail camera out.

The trio of deer is a doe and two bucks. This could be a mother and two kids, but it could also be that they have formed a small group – this is quite a common thing for roe deer to do over the winter. They will though split up in the spring, especially when a buck becomes more dominant about territory.

One afternoon I managed to have a close encounter with a solo doe. It hadn’t seen me creep up (to be honest I almost didn’t see it) and initially it had it’s back to me. There was also a lot of tree branches between us.

I watched it for about 10/15 minutes. Even though it didn’t realise I was there, it was still very alert. It would constantly stop grazing to lift it’s head up; look around and sniff the air.  As much as it’s great to watch her, it got to the point where I had to leave, so I just left as quietly as I could.

Deer trail camera

I have a basic trail camera which I sometimes leave out for a couple of nights. Whilst doing some exploring I came across what seemed to be a well trodden deer track. I left the camera out and the video is edited clips of the deer that appeared. There was also a brief appearance by a badger (not in video edit though), but I haven’t been able to find a sett; it could have just wandered to this track from afar.

Here’s a few more photos from the recent encounters.
