Fox Cubs at Play

They are back! A few years ago, a fox family had taken up residence nearby. It was a treat to see them, and they were featured in an earlier blog post (links are provided below). After a couple of years of disappointment, they have returned! A mother and five cubs.

I had a very close encounter one morning when I went to collect a trail camera. I’d picked up the camera and thought I’d hang around for a little while. To my surprise, and delight, a vixen and cub appeared from behind a mound of grass. They hadn’t seen me, and they just kept on coming toward me. I kept still; just my camera focused on their approach. They got to about ten feet of me before they stopped in their tracks, looked, and then ran off! The header picture above of the cub, and the image of the the vixen, were from this encounter.

A couple of days after the close encounter, I went out again, to collect another trail camera. I was hoping to see the cubs and I wasn’t disappointed. All five cubs were very boisterous and playful for quite a while, with the vixen keeping a very attentive watch over them – and me, I think. I was taking some photos, but I was mainly shooting video. It was too good an opportunity not to capture them in this mood. They are already starting to practice the skills they will need when they have to fend for themselves. It was so much fun watching them, and I edited the footage I took to create a short video.

I hope you enjoy the video. Here’s a few of the photos I took whilst I was also shooting the video.
