Fox - vixen

Fox, Deer & Woodpecker

It is that time of year when the young of many animals start to appear. This is mum (the Vixen), and she and her partner have a group of cubs. I caught one on my trail camera, but I’m really hoping that I’ll get to see them out in the day playing around, and get some good photos of all the cubs.

I happened to come across this lady when I was out mid-afternoon. I did go for a stroll, wondering if any of the family might decide to come out. Fortunately I was in the right place at the right time to see her briefly.

There is a pregnant Roe Deer I am keeping my eye on. At least I’m trying to, as it’s not so easy now all the vegetation has grown so much. Trees, bushes, long grass, all make spotting them and getting a clean photo more difficult. It would be such a shame though to miss seeing the deer’s ‘kid’; she should give birth any time now.

So I will persevere. Between the trail camera and my hiding in the woods I hope I’ll see the kid. Preference is obviously to see it with my own eyes and get some photos, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

I Hadn’t seen any woodpecker for a while, but I went looking at an old tree where I’d seen them last year; and lo and behold, there they were!

I was watching two of them come and go between the old tree (full of holes) and one next to it, where they seem to like landing first before going over to the old one.

What I didn’t realise, until I got home and looked at the photos, is that it was a young woodpecker and a male; so I guess it was father taking out it’s child and showing it how to go about things!
